Maketh. What is the Guard's history with that man, Sato?
[She hasn't committed to getting involved in any of this, but she's determined to at least be informed on the matter. She has several friends in the Guard and she saw Sato encouraging a young girl to go into a highly dangerous area without any warning about the monsters. She's not exactly a law-abiding or especially moral person herself, but Sato's a very different sort than she is.]
[Carlisle isn't the sort to reach out to people, and generally not the type to offer up his... more specialized services to just anyone; however, given the latest news on the communicators, knowing he's been able to help in similar cases before, being aware of Glacius' work with the Guard... and needing to make amends to Shadow in some way, he feels he probably should help where he can in this instance.]
Miss Tua,
With the revelation of another potential murder having been discussed on the network, I feel I should let you know where I might be able to be of service in the future. I believe I might have mentioned it to you once before, but I am skilled in scrying the dead, should another body appear and you find yourself in need of answers a corpse can no longer give you.
Maketh. Lance came to me with a plan to manage Sato in the short term. I thought little of his proposal, but he is determined to see it through with or without our assistance. As it will affect the Guard and imply our involvement regardless of what we do — not to mention our duty to keep him safe — I think it best that we impose ourselves.
To that end, he has agreed to take council with us. I want you and Nick there. If we are to avoid a repeat of recent events then our combined wisdom is needed.
[He sighs, and after a beat tells her what he will say to no one else:]
I worry that our control over this... feud slips through our hands like grains of sand. Sato should never have been this much of a concern for us. We cannot make any further mistakes.
Not that this is new--he's usually thinking, sometimes a bit too much as Booth has said before--but recently he's been taking the time to focus inward instead of outward, and has come to a few decisions.
That's the main reason why he shows up at the Guard post, which is a place he typically avoids, but he's hoping to find Maketh in person instead of trying to deal with her over the network. Considering his planned strategy involves being very direct, making it impossible to hang up on him will help that.
He's dressed casually and non-threateningly, not carrying his gun, and generally appears as unintimidating as possible even if that's an unintended side effect; still, in contrast to all of that, he's centered and determined and that gives him something of an aura of confidence.
His voice is still a little quiet, but not as noticeably so and the evenness of his tone makes up for it.]
[After Iamarl's body fades from the tight circle of his arms, along with the evidence of her existence — in the end, even her spilt blood was an illusion — Henry leaves the apartment.
He leaves, and does not return until the next day, at the hour he would ordinarily return from his early morning training.
His eyes are dark and there is a harshness in his expression, the outward evidence of his heavy spirits. He looks for Maketh, expecting nothing good. He knows that she is alive; before Iamarl's death he'd looked for her and found her alone and passed out. There had been no reason to disturb what uneasy rest she'd managed. But now...]
[Lance has finally managed to get his nerves back under control, or at least enough to get a little sleep; he therefore looks a little better than he has the last few days, and has the energy to be up before his shift watching the equipment in the arena.
The problem is that that way he's been controlling his nerves is through a combination of medication and alcohol that he's very aware he's not supposed to be mixing, and he's also aware that relying on either--let alone both--is the not the best way to handle things. But he can worry about that more after the new arrivals get here and things hopefully has a small period of downtime.
He steps into the speakeasy and heads to the bar, ordering one of the drinks he's finally acquiring a taste for, and it's only then that he notices Maketh is here as well. Great. Of course she is.
He could just ignore her, and he should, but after her conversation with Brennan and Lance's subsequent talk with Brennan as well, he's less inclined to back off and retreat. There's also the issue of the recent developments of the gods and the Null, and that he'd noticed something interesting while stalking conversations on Fear's post, and everything combines to give him reason to take a seat at the bar instead of retreating. He even initiates conversation, after a moment.]
[There is much that he and Maketh must discuss, but in truth, Henry has been reluctant to dampen the better than usual mood his sister has been in of late. Still, matters cannot wait forever, and he feels they must be on the same page before Hadriel's pressing concerns spiral out of control.
It seems better to do in the privacy of their home, where they will not be overheard and can express their opinions freely. There are so many topics to cover; the Null, the murders. He hasn't even had the chance to drink in honour of Jill's departure.
It's not merely work on his mind, either — there's Pleasant Valley, and how long has it been since he and Maketh simply talked a while?
So Henry makes himself comfortable on their sofa and waits for Maketh to show up in their apartment. When she appears, he raises an arm and gestures her over, as he calls out:]
Maketh? You alright? [Yes, he does think about her. Yes, he does care. Oh look, a spark of humanity!] I know you were at the center of it all. You didn't get burned, right?
[Maketh's stance on the gods had always been clear, but the Null? How far is any of this supposed to go before it's too much? Rome has no mind for moral quandries like this, and so he reports to his superior officer immediately.
At the very least, they both have some experience in murdering the few to save the many.]
[Lance isn't bothering using the network, for several reasons, and just shows up at the guard post; if he can't find Maketh here surely someone will know where to look for her, and it probably wouldn't hurt to talk to other guard members anyway.
So he steps inside cautiously, and upon noticing Maketh is indeed here just decides to get this over with and make his way over to her desk.]
Hello, Maketh.
[Might as well start off civilly before things go downhill.]
[Rey brings Maketh to Rome's house, after everything.
Rome has been expecting the both of them and so his bed is made, his house is clean. Rey doesn't think it would be a good idea to stay around, and so Rome lets her go, confident in his abilities to keep Maketh in check, if need be.
He's still not sure how he feels about this. For all intents and purposes, Maketh has fulfilled the role of his handler in the past few months, and Rome isn't exactly comfortable with the sudden lack of that structure. Still, this is something he needs to do: for Rey and for the guard, and perhaps most importantly, for Maketh.
When she wakes, she will be laying on his bed with freshly washed sheets and a near-spotless room around her, shoes waiting for her at the foot of the bed, everything else intact. There is a warm cup of tea on the bedside table, a small cup with several pills next to it- painkillers, should she need them.
Rome is puttering around the kitchen, cooking. It doesn't exactly smell great, but it doesn't seem too disastrous either.]
[The ruckus in the background is audible enough, rumbling the walls of the building Rey's sought refuge in. She's already reached out to Nick and Henry, and seen what happened to the latter on the network. If it all goes to hell here, then she can't carry the last words she had with Maketh as final.]
Maketh.
I know I'm-- [something collapses in the background] --probably the last person you want to hear from right now, and I don't expect you to answer, but--
[Laser fire. Crash. Yelling in the distance. Someone needs help? Can't tell.] Please be safe.
[Like Rey said, she doesn't expect a reply. Not now. So she runs back into the fray.]
